"MySports": The Future of Sports Streaming? - Part 3: The RSN Dilemma: Alternatives to "MySports" (and Why Sling TV Needs to Step Up)

In Part 1, we dissected DIRECTV's new "MySports" package, and in Part 2, we pondered the possibility of Venu's resurrection. But let's face it, the high price of "MySports" might leave some cord-cutters, especially those on a budget, wondering if there are other ways to get their sports fix, particularly when it comes to those essential regional sports networks (RSNs).

Why RSNs Matter

For many sports fans, RSNs are the lifeblood of their viewing experience. They provide access to local team games, pre- and post-game shows, and regional sports coverage that you just can't get anywhere else. But as we move further into the streaming era, accessing RSNs has become a bit of a puzzle.

"MySports" and the RSN Question

"MySports" has made a splash by including RSNs in its lineup, but as we discussed, it comes at a premium price. And while it offers a decent selection of RSNs, it's not available in all markets.

So, what are the alternatives?

Exploring Your Options

Thankfully, "MySports" isn't the only game in town. Here are some other ways to access RSNs without breaking the bank:

  • Other Live TV Streaming Services: Some services, like YouTube TV, Hulu+Live TV, and FuboTV, offer RSNs in various markets. It's crucial to compare their pricing, channel lineups, and features to see which one best suits your needs.
  • Direct-to-Consumer Options: Keep an eye out for emerging direct-to-consumer options from individual RSN providers. For example, FanDuel Sports Network (formerly Bally Sports Plus) offers streaming access to specific regional sports content.
  • Antenna + Streaming: This is my personal favorite! Using an antenna (like my trusty AirTV setup) combined with targeted sports streaming subscriptions (like ESPN Plus) can be a surprisingly cost-effective way to get RSNs and other sports content.

Sling TV: Time to Step Up

Speaking of alternatives, let's talk about Sling TV. As a long-time Sling TV user (at least I am during college football season), I've sometimes been frustrated by their lack of RSNs.

Sling TV's affordability and flexibility are appealing, but their absence of RSNs is a major drawback for many sports fans. It's time for Sling TV to step up and add RSNs to their offerings, either as part of their core packages or as a separate add-on.

This would not only benefit Sling TV by attracting more subscribers but also empower cord-cutters with more choices and control over their sports viewing experience.

The Cord-Cutting Imperative: Choice and Flexibility

My Streaming Life is all about finding the best ways to watch what I want, and I hope Sling TV will make it easier for sports fans to access their local teams.

The beauty of cord-cutting lies in its flexibility and customization. The more options we have, the better we can tailor our viewing experience to our individual needs and budgets.

So, while "MySports" has entered the arena, it's not the only solution. By exploring alternatives and advocating for better options, we can continue to shape the future of sports streaming and ensure that cord-cutters have access to the content they crave.
