"MySports": The Future of Sports Streaming? - Part 2: Could "MySports" Spark Venu's Return?

In Part 1, we took a deep dive into DIRECTV's new "MySports" package, analyzing its channel lineup, price, and potential impact on the streaming landscape. But as we explored the evolving world of cord-cutting sports, one question lingered: could the launch of "MySports" actually pave the way for the resurrection of Venu Sports?

A Quick Recap: The Venu Saga

Remember Venu? It was the ambitious sports streaming service announced in early 2024 by a powerhouse trio: Disney (ESPN), Warner Bros. Discovery, and Fox. It promised a comprehensive collection of sports content, but it was met with a lawsuit from FuboTV, who alleged anti-competitive practices.

Then, in a surprising turn of events, Disney acquired Fubo's technology and subscriber base for Hulu+Live TV, and Fubo dropped its lawsuit. Just days later, Venu was abruptly canceled, with the official reason being "shifting market dynamics."

Could "MySports" Change the Game?

Now, with the arrival of "MySports," the landscape has shifted once again. Could this be the catalyst that brings Venu back from the dead?

Here's why it's possible:

  • Competition is Key: Antitrust concerns were a major factor in Venu's demise. But with "MySports" already established, a revived Venu wouldn't be seen as creating a monopoly or stifling competition. In fact, it could be argued that it increases consumer choice.
  • Reduced Market Power: With "MySports" as a competitor, Venu would have less power to dictate prices or control the market. This could address one of the main concerns raised in the Fubo lawsuit.
  • Precedent Set: The fact that "MySports" has launched without facing significant antitrust challenges could set a precedent for Venu or other similar services.

Challenges and Opportunities

Of course, a Venu revival would still face challenges:

  • Pricing: Venu would need to be competitively priced to attract subscribers, especially with "MySports" already commanding a higher price point than initially anticipated for Venu. It's possible a revived Venu would need to be more expensive than originally planned.
  • Content Acquisition: Securing the necessary sports rights could be expensive and complex, especially with the rising cost of sports programming.
  • Differentiation: Venu would need to offer a unique value proposition to stand out from "MySports" and other competitors.

However, there are also opportunities:

  • Brand Recognition: Venu still has some brand recognition from its initial announcement, which could give it a head start.
  • Disney's Content: Disney's vast sports content library, including ESPN, could be a major draw for subscribers.
  • Innovation: Venu could differentiate itself by offering innovative features or focusing on specific niche sports.

Predictions and Possibilities

While it's impossible to say for sure whether Venu will return, the launch of "MySports" has certainly created a more favorable environment for its revival.

If Venu does make a comeback, it will need to learn from its past mistakes and offer a compelling product that meets the needs of today's sports fans. Competitive pricing, a strong content lineup, and innovative features will be key to its success.

Personally, I'm not holding my breath for Venu's return. While it's certainly possible, I think it's unlikely given Disney's current focus on its combined streaming service (Disney Plus and Hulu). But hey, I've been surprised before!

Looking Ahead:

While the return of Venu remains uncertain, the need for affordable and accessible sports streaming options is clear. In Part 3 of this series, we'll shift our focus to the challenges of accessing regional sports networks (RSNs) and explore some alternatives to "MySports" that might better fit your cord-cutting budget and viewing habits. Stay tuned!

My Streaming Life is always evolving, and I'll be keeping a close eye on whether Venu makes a surprise comeback. In the meantime, "MySports" has shaken up the sports streaming landscape, and it will be fascinating to see how it impacts the future of cord-cutting sports.
