YouTube TV Price Hike: Is It Still Worth It?

It's that time again, folks. The dreaded price hike email has arrived from YouTube TV.  And this time, it's a big one. Here's the bad news:

"We're writing to let you know that the price of your YouTube TV membership is increasing from $72.99 to $82.99 per month, starting on your next billing cycle after January 13, 2025."

That's a whopping $10 increase, bringing the total cost to $82.99 per month.  This comes on the heels of their last price hike less than two years ago, which means YouTube TV has increased its price by almost 30% in a short period!

The Streaming Wars Heat Up: Everyone's Raising Prices

Unfortunately, YouTube TV isn't alone in this trend.  Many live TV streaming services are increasing their prices, citing rising programming costs.  Here's a quick look at the competition:

  • Hulu + Live TV: Also just increased to $82.99 per month for their base plan.
  • Sling TV: Increasing prices by $5.99 per month for all plans starting December 20, 2024. This means Sling Orange and Blue will each cost $45.99, and Sling Orange & Blue will be $60.99.
  • DirecTV Stream: Just raised their prices too! Plans now start at $86.99 per month for their basic package and go up to $169.99 per month for their Premier package.

Is YouTube TV Still a Good Deal?

With prices soaring across the board, it's time to seriously evaluate if YouTube TV is still worth the investment.  While it offers a strong channel lineup, unlimited DVR, and a great user experience, that $82.99 price tag is becoming hard to justify, especially when other services offer similar features for the same price or even less.

What Can You Do?

  1. Compare and Contrast: Take a close look at the channel lineups and features of each service. Hulu + Live TV is now the same price as YouTube TV, so which one offers the better value for you? Sling TV is still cheaper, but you'll have to decide if the channel selection meets your needs. And don't forget to weigh your options against DirecTV Stream's offerings, even though their prices have also climbed.
  2. Bundle Up: See if you can save money by bundling YouTube TV with YouTube Premium or your internet service.
  3. Negotiate: Don't be afraid to contact YouTube TV customer support. They might be willing to offer you a discount or promotion to keep you as a subscriber.
  4. Consider Alternatives: Perhaps it's time to explore other entertainment options. Could you get by with a combination of Netflix, Hulu (on-demand), and free streaming services like Pluto TV, Tubi, Sling Free stream, etc.?

The Bottom Line

These price hikes are a harsh reality for cord-cutters.  It's more important than ever to be a savvy consumer and make sure you're getting the best value for your money.
